1948
The Beginning
Former Secretary of State and the first United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Edward R. Stettinius Jr., assists in drafting a corporate and maritime code for Liberia.
First Flagged
On March 11, 1949 the oil tanker “World Peace”, owned by Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos, and under the Getty Oil Company, became the first vessel to fly the Liberian Flag. This moment would mark the inception of a steadfast and esteemed partnership between the Liberian Registry and the Greek shipping community.

Exponential Growth
The popularity of The Liberian Registry as an open registry continues to grow, passing Panama in gross tonnage. The following year, The Liberian Registry also passes Panama in number of ships registered.
Establishing Change
The Liberian Registry becomes a charter member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to help create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted, and universally implemented.

Going Global
During the 1970s the Registry opens offices in foreign countries, extending it’s reach to Europe, Asia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Greece. The Liberian Registry is the world’s largest with 33 million GT and 1,867 vessels and maintains this title for the following two decades.
Raising the Bar
The Liberian Shipowners’ Council (LSC) is established to ensure that Liberian flag shipowners could operate their vessels to the highest practical standards of quality, safety, and environmental protection while retaining the cost-effective advantages of the open register system.

The Largest Registry in Tonnage
The Liberian Registry’s fleet reaches over 64 million gross registered tons and becomes the world’s largest fleet in terms of dead weight tonnage.
Man of Vision
Yoram Cohen establishes LISCR and begins a new era for The Liberian Registry. Under his leadership the Registry is taken to new heights as he established an invigorating culture, vision, and growth plan for the organization that carries it forward even today.

Hundred Million Milestone
The Liberian Registry celebrates a historic milestone of reaching 100,000,000 gross tons with the christening and delivery of the bulk carrier, Sanko Mercury in Japan.
Increasing Our Presence
The Shanghai office opening signifies a pivotal moment in the Registry’s entry into China and the Chinese market. This expansion underscores the unwavering dedication and commitment to serving the maritime community in the region.

Accelerated Expansion
The Liberian Registry 4,000th vessel, the High Trust, is registered by d'Amico Tankers. At this time, The Liberian Registry makes up 11% of the world fleet and holds the title of "The World's Largest Container Fleet." The titles of "World's Largest Tanker Fleet" and "World's Largest Bulker Fleet" follow in the coming years.
Cause for Celebration
The Liberian Registry marks its momentous 75th anniversary with a rapid surge in growth, earning it the title of the "Fastest Growing Flag." This ascent serves as a testament to an unwavering commitment to excellence, acquiring acknowledgment from clients who regard it as the best Registry overall.

Propelled by outstanding growth in previous years, The Liberian Registry reattained its premier status as the world’s largest Flag, constituting a noteworthy 16% share of the global market fleet.
